Rummage Sale Treasures

The other day my family and I rose early on a Saturday morning to go to our town's annual rummage sale fund-raiser. It's a town-wide event, in which citizens have the option to donate unwanted items to the town, which volunteers sell back to the public. Profits go to town funding. It's a pretty neat event because the rummage sale is relatively large compared to usual yard sales. I enjoyed spending time with my sister, brother and young cousins as we browsed toys, books, ornaments, decorations, clothes, dishes, art and other nick-nacks.

About an hour into our browsing a large pile of fabric and sewing supplies caught my eye. Taking Hannah Jane's hand (my 4 year old cousin), I quickly made my way through the maze of people and tables. With Hannah Jane's help, I gathered up three bags of material which I picked through carefully. I also found a gem when I opened a box to see hundreds of cut quilting squares (are they called quilting 'squares' when they're in octagon shape?) Anyway, I loaded up both Hannah Jane's arms and my bags with fabric and carried it to the table by the front door. Ms. Shirley, a volunteer at the function (as well as the teacher of a sewing class that I once attended) serviced me. I was planning to figure out how much she wanted to charge for everything I had, and then narrow my choices down from there, as I only had $10 in cash.

Take a guess at what she charged me for all of it?

Ten dollars!

I'm so appreciative of the deal that she gave me. Aren't Rummage Sales lovely for that reason? Here are some photos of the treasures that Hannah Jane and I dug up:

I love new fabrics - I can't wait to use them!

Beautiful prints of all kinds. Great for accents!

Some of my favorites from the quilting squares...

This reminds me of the pictures I took when we recently organized our sewing closet that I never had a chance to post...... hmmm.... =)

McCauley pulls out all of our fabrics and begins sorting...

Lots of folding...

Sorting through patterns with Marmy...

Marmy suggests we match our patterns and fabrics...

We began with our dress patterns and stacks of fabric...

A perfect match for base and overlay....

We cut a tiny piece out of the fabric...

We pinned it to the pattern, along with a tag that noted which version of the dress the fabric should be used for, and who was planning to use it...
...and for the fabric we cut a length of ribbon...

...which we used to secure a tag to the choice fabric - marked with the number of the matching pattern, the name of the seamstress who was planning to use it, the width of the fabric and the approximate length of fabric.

Dutchess so kindly monitors the our stacks of sorted material
(She's playing dead to fool any intruders... so clever. ;-)

Our lovely stacks of material in a transparent container...

I was given yards of lovely corduroy fabric from Marmy for my hope chest as well! =)

We had a lovely time becoming organized... can't wait to begin sewing! I hope y'all are having a great Autumn day!

Christ's blessings,

  1. Oooh, what great finds at the rummage sale! Aren't they great? I love the prices and the treasures that can be found for little money. :) I love seeing your organizing pictures. Looks like it took a little time, but when you start sewing you will love the labels and the "systems" that you came up with, they were very clever!

  4. I am very behind reading many things after being away for nearly a week. The Lord led me to read this post. The day before yesterday my husband decided to let me use the very old spare caravan we have as a crafting place. I have a large stash of stuff and will definately be using the system you described. I suppose it would also highlight which materials and notions that are left to be purchased for a particular project as well. As always thank you for a lovely blog.
